About this development

Construction of the Green Line (also called “Suez Canal on Rails”), part of Egypt’s first high-speed rail network of 660 km (410 miles) total, with the Cairo-to-Alexandria segment approximately 208 km in length. The Cairo-to-Alexandria segment, starts at Ain Sokhna, a port city on the Gulf of Suez (Red Sea coast) in Suez Governorate, Egypt. The line extends to Marsa Matrouh and Alexandria on the Mediterranean, passing through Cairo, Egypt. Project cost is estimated at $4.5 billion for the Green Line, part of a $23 billion, 2,000-km network plan. Scope of works could include: The Green Line’s scope includes infrastructure, rolling stock, and supporting systems: Track and Civil Works: 660 km of electrified, double-track high-speed rail (standard gauge, 1,435 mm). 15 stations: Ain Sokhna, New Administrative Capital, Wagh Quibli, 6th of October I and II, Rod El Farag, Wadi El Natroun, Borg El Arab, Bahig, Al Hammam, El Omayed, New Alamein City, Borg El Arab Stadium, El Amreya, and Alexandria. Bridges, viaducts, and earthworks to navigate desert and urban terrain. Electrification and Signaling: 25 kV 50 Hz electrification system. European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 for safety and efficiency. Four transformers and two substations installed for reliable power. Rolling Stock: Velaro Egypt trains: 8-car, 656-foot units, 481 seats, 155 mph max speed, with business class, standard class, restaurant car, wheelchair spaces, Wi-Fi, and sand-resistant features (e.g., air filtration, spoilers). Desiro regional trains and Vectron freight locomotives. Stations and Depots: Modern stations with passenger amenities; freight depots for goods handling. Maintenance workshop for trains and infrastructure. The exact GPS location is not known and the Marker has been placed at Ain Sokhna, 29.6167, 32.3167.
